Founded in 1966, the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is the college of choice for nearly one out of every three adults in the Greater Pittsburgh metropolitan region. With more than 35,000 students, nearly 160 academic programs, and noncredit and workforce development courses, CCAC’s alumni are actively engaged in every sector of society.

CCAC is dedicated to advancing sustainability in higher education and the surrounding community. Through green facilities, academic programs, and civic engagement, CCAC uses sustainability to advance their mission to prepare individuals to succeed in a complex global society. CCAC is working with Enlightened Inc, a Siemens company, and Metasys from Johnson Controls (JCI) on campus-wide building modernization that utilizes IoT solutions. The project focuses on a COVID-19 mitigation strategy that includes the retrofitting of indoor spaces with LED lighting and IoT control systems across four campuses, which will incorporate +1,700 sensors across 1.8 million square feet. The sensors provide advanced lighting control, space management, and HVAC systems monitors and controls, enabling energy savings and increasing the airflow and indoor air quality.

CCAC has also begun construction on a 60,000-square-foot Workforce Development & Training Center as part of its “Pioneering Pittsburgh’s New Workforce” initiative. The new Net Zero Energy (NZE), LEED Platinum building is located on the North Side and will feature experiential classrooms, labs, collaborative areas, a new culinary school, and accessible outdoor greenspace.
